| Astronomy Picture of the Day (antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html) | Just a bunch of really cool astronomical pictures. Part of nasa.gov, the pictures are mirrored at other sites too. |
| Zoom Astronomy (www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/astronomy) | An encyclopedic approach to basic astronomy. Worth a look - especially if new to astronomy. Zoom also hosts some biology and technology sites. |
| The (seds.lpl.arizona.edu/nineplanets/nineplanets/nineplanets.html) | A truly very cool virtual tour of our solar system's planets and their satellites. Excellent pictures, many from www.jpl.nasa.gov. A must see by anyone studying astronomy. |
| The Lunar Landing Hoax (www.clavius.org/) | Some conspiracy theorists contend we never went to the moon in 1969 and the 1970s. They draw upon a variety of bits of fallacious data. They're wrong. We went. |
| Buying A Star Ripoff (www.iau.org/public_press/themes/buying_star_names/) | So you want to buy a star? Go here to see the truth about "star registries" and other star naming companies. Attorneys for one company sued to have this type of information removed from Perkins Observatory website. Go figure. An interesting counter-argument about starnaming can be found at: www.universetoday.com/2008/04/17/name-a-star-real-or-ripoff |
| Perkins Observatory (www.perkins-observatory.org) | Just a really great resource. |
| AstroWeb: Astronomy/Astrophysics on the Internet (www.cv.nrao.edu/fits/www/astronomy.html) | An incredible - possibly comprehensive - resource of internet links to astronomy and astrophysics sites. It would truly be a shame to lose this site! |
| Inconstant Moon (www.inconstantmoon.com) | Explore the surface of the moon and discover what might be seen on a particular night of the month. |
| Celestial Times (www.minervatech.u-net.com/celestial/index.htm) | A monthly guide to the night sky (predominantly solar system objects) with links to The Nine Planets |
| Sky & Telescope magazine on-line (www.skypub.com) | Nothing more need be said. |
| Jet Propulsion Laboratory (www.jpl.nasa.gov) | An encyclopedia of images from most, if not all, NASA manned and unmanned missions. A fun site to simply lose yourself in. Caution: you can download enormous(!) picture files. |
| Sky View Cafe (www.skyviewcafe.com/index.php) | When you know what to do with this it's really neat. Even if you're not exactly sure, it's fun to play with. A really valuable ephemeris calculator for sky watchers. Takes awhile to load. 118 W long., 34 N lat. good enough for most people in the L.A. CA area. |
| Anglo-Australian Observatory (www.aao.gov.au/images/general/favorites.html) | A gallery of AAO images that I just really like. Just for fun, point your browser to www.aao.gov.au and explore the AAO site. |
| HubbleSite (hubble.stsci.edu) | OK. You like HST images and want to know more about the HST orbiting observatory? Here ya go! |
| Space Telescope Science Institute (oposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo) | Lots of information about and pix from the Hubble Space Telescope. |
| Meade Instruments Corporation (www.meade.com) | Meade Instruments manufactures excellent production model telescopes. The customer support section has a good discussion of how to buy a telescope. |
| Celestron International (www.celestron.com) | Celestron manufactures excellent production model telescopes at very good prices. The technical support section has a good discussion of telescope basics. |
| Astronomy Links & Interesting Sites (jrscience.wcp.muohio.edu/html/Astronomy.html) | Another encyclopedia of astronomical information and links. Useful but kinda difficult-to-follow organization. Decide what you want and use the Find option or just explore. |
| Powers of 10 (http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/) | Get a feel for the scale of things - from the size of a galaxy down to the atomic nucleus. It's too bad the applet doesn't go out farther than a single galaxy but this is a fun and interesting Java applet nonetheless. Loading is slow, so be patient. |
