Hardware and software

 

Before the first exam, you need a 500MB USB memory stick for answering exam questions using your computer.  Before the second day of class, you need a laptop computer with the following installed and running properly:

· Windows XP Pro (or higher) operating system.

· Office XP2003 (or higher) software, with Solver added into Excel.

· The software (Management Scientist, Lingo 10.0, Premium Solver 7.0) that came on the Student CD included in your textbook.  (Tip: add Solver before installing those programs.)

Tip: If you do not have a laptop computer able to run those programs or if you do not have those programs, consider Tech Central, second floor, Payson Library, 310-506-4811, Tech.Central@pepperdine.edu.

Tip: After a trial version of the Lingo program has to be reloaded every 30 days.

Warning: The Business Administration Division does not support Apple computers.  So you need to solve any compatibility problems trying to run the course software on an Apple computer.

 

 

 

Community rules

 

Judeo-Christian values should guide your personal behavior in our classroom community. 

 

First, study so that you are not a burden, and so that you have something to share.  In particular, participate in discussions, both in and out of class.  And if you miss a class, make up most of the work on your own, including attending any available alternative section.  Second, practice humility by asking questions when you need help understanding the lecture notes, the text, or homework problems.  Finally, be joyful —- that’s required.

 

For my part, I will be available to you both in my office house and before and after class.  I will help you develop by initiating discussions in and out of class.  I also look forward to being hospitable.

 

 

 

Class rules

 

Be present, punctual, prepared, and attentive during each class meeting

• Present

I expect you to be present for each class meeting.  If you develop a pattern of missing class meetings, then I will advise you to drop this course.

• Punctual

Avoid being tardy.  Your tardiness disrupts the flow of the class, and you miss what others have already heard.  If you develop a pattern of coming late to class or leaving early, then I will advise you to drop this course.

• Prepared

Complete and study the assigned readings prior to class meetings.

• Attentive

Avoid talking while another person is addressing the entire class, turn off your cell phones, and refrain from text messaging.

 

 

 

Exam rules

 

· Arrive on time on exam days and bring a pencil and your laptop.  You get a zero if you arrive more than 10 minutes late.  This policy is to prevent cheating.  If you arrive late, you will not be given extra time.

· Refrain from talking with other students during the exam.

· Turn in exams within the time allotted. 

· If you leave the exam room anytime after the exam starts, then your exam is over.  This policy is to prevent cheating.

· I will gladly give and explain the answers to any exam question only after every student has completed the exam.  This policy is to prevent cheating.

 

 

 

Complaints about Scores

 

If you have any complaints about the score of an exam or an assignment, you must submit them in writing within three days after the scores for the exam or the assignment are made available to the class.  Clearly explain your reason for contesting the score.  I will discuss your complaint with you only after you have submitted a written note, and I have had time to consider your note.  The three-day rule is to make sure that both you and I address expeditiously any complaints that have merit.

 

 

 

Disability Services

 

The Disability Services Office (DSO) offers a variety of services and accommodations to students with disabilities based on appropriate documentation, the nature of disability, and academic need.   In order to initiate services, students should meet with the Director of the DSO at the beginning of the semester to discuss reasonable accommodation.  If a student does not request accommodation or provide documentation, the faculty member is under no obligation to provide accommodations.   You may contact the Director of the DSO at extension 6500.
