Homework #1 - MATH 317

Download this file for the homework assignment: 317HW1.xls. To download this file in Internet Explorer, right-click on the link, left-click on Save Target As ...., left-click on Save, the file will download. When the download is completed, left-click on Close.

Open the file 317HW1.xls in Microsoft Excel. To do this, start Excel, left-click on File > Open, locate and single left-click the file in the Open dialog box, and left-click Open. The file should open and you should see the following:

Note that data headings are in column 1, and data values are found in columns A-D in rows 2-50.

Assignment

1. In column F, add the entries in Columns A and B

2. In column G, multiply the entries in Columns C and D

3. In column H, divide each person's IQ value by their age

4. In column I, compute each persons Body Mass Index (BMI) - BMI = mass * height^2

5. Enter a value of 3.76 in Cell A55. Divide each IQ value by the contents of cell A55 and report the results in column J.

6. Print out the area A1:I55 from the spreadsheet.

7. Produce a scatter graph of Height, Weight and IQ versus Age - do not connect the data points with lines. Print the graph.

8. Produce a scatter graph of Weight versus IQ - do not use a symbol on each data point, connect the data points with a smooth line. Print the graph.

9. Produce a line graph of IQ versus Age - connect the data points with straight lines. Print the graph. Is there a relationship between IQ and Age?

10. Sort the data values so that Age increases as you view down the chart. Be certain to keep the correct Height, Weight and IQ values associated with each person. Be certain not to include the item entered into cell A55 in the sort.

11. Print out the area A1:I55 from the spreadsheet.

12. Produce a scatter graph of IQ versus Age - connect the data points with straight lines. Print the graph. Is there a relationship between IQ and Age?
